About:

You Survived the Heart Attack—Now What?

Welcome to Stronger After the Storm, the podcast for men over 50 rebuilding their lives — emotionally, mentally, and spiritually — after a heart attack. I’m Dougie, and I know this road. At 50, I had a heart attack that changed everything. What came after wasn’t just physical recovery —it was fear, anxiety, silence, and a deep questioning of identity and purpose. I’ve worked many years in the rugged world of Scottish forestry—I’m no stranger to gales, heavy timber, and hard work. But nothing prepared me for the storm that hit at 4 AM, just over eleven years ago now.

After surviving a heart attack, I realised that physical rehab was only half the battle. While the doctors were busy fixing my heart, I was left alone in a quiet country cottage trying to fix my mind. The ‘head noise,’ the constant scanning for trouble, and the guilt of sitting still were the real challenges I had to navigate.

I started Stronger After The Storm because I recognised a gap. We need a place for candid, no-nonsense conversation about what happens after the sirens stop. Alongside my companion, Buddy, I developed what I call the ‘Steady Hand’ approach—a way to quieten the anxiety and find a new rhythm.

My philosophy is simple: Recovery isn’t a straight line — it’s a zig-zag. Real strength isn’t found in the old ‘tough-guy’ routine of staying silent. It’s found in the honesty to admit you’re struggling and the discipline to keep moving forward anyway.

I’m glad you’re here. Let’s take it one heartbeat at a time.

The Man Behind the Storm: From the Seven Seas to the Second Life

The Foundation: The Pub and the Ports

Before I could even drive, I was working. My parents ran local pubs, and as a young boy, I was behind the scenes, along with my siblings—learning that a business only stays upright if someone is willing to do the heavy lifting when nobody is watching. At fifteen, that “behind the scenes” life turned into a life of adventure. I left school and headed for the Merchant Navy. For nine years, I sailed the seven seas, learning that in a real storm, you don’t panic—you follow the protocol, and you trust your fellow crew.

The Rise: From the Woods to the Business End

When I finally came home for good, I traded the oceans for the woods, founding my first forestry business. But I always had a love for the “service” I’d learned in my parents’ pubs. To support my young family, I worked nights in hotel kitchens and bars after a full day in the woods.

That grit paid off. I went from the kitchen to managing a hotel, and eventually, to owning two hotels and an outside catering business. I was the “provider.” I was the boss. I was in control. Or so I thought!

The Life-Quake: When the Body Says “No More”

By 2013, I realised the hotel life was taking a toll I couldn’t ignore. I walked away and returned to my roots in forestry. But the years of “provider pressure” had left a mark. Soon after, I was hit by bi-lateral pneumonia. It floored me for three months. I fought back, rebuilt, and returned to the woods.

Four months later, the lightning bolt struck. The “Storm” finally made landfall. A heart attack.

The Rebuild: The Marathon Mindset

The hospital fixed the blockage in my heart, but they didn’t fix the head noise. I had to figure out how to be “Stronger After The Storm.” I didn’t just want to “survive”—I wanted to live with intention.

Two and a half years after my heart attack, I crossed the finish line of my first marathon. It wasn’t about the 26.2 miles; it was about the proof. The proof to myself that the storm doesn’t have to be the end of the story—it can be the start of a much better chapter.

Why I Founded Stronger After The Storm

In August 2025, it finally clicked. My journey—the Navy, the hotels, the forestry, the double-hit of illness—wasn’t just a series of events. It was a long apprenticeship in resilience that I never asked for, but am now grateful to have.

I built Stronger After The Storm because when I got home from the hospital, there was no road map for the “Inner Chaos.” I’m here to be the man a few steps further down the road that I wish I’d met when I first got home. To walk the same path alongside you, sharing the map I had to draw for myself. Whether you’ve grown to be a leader of a team, the head of a business, or you’ve built your life on the tools, the ‘Inner Chaos’ of a heart attack hits us all the same. If you’ve faced the storm, I’m here to offer support to help you rebuild.

I’m not a doctor. Everything I share here is based on my own boots-on-the-ground experience—always consult your own medical team for your specific recovery.

Who is this show for?

This isn’t for everyone.

It’s for the men who lie awake in the quiet hours of the night, asking the questions no one prepares you for:

  • “Am I going to die tonight?”
  • “Will I ever feel like myself again?”
  • “What do I do now?”

If you’ve spent years being the one everyone else leans on—the provider, the hard worker, the rock, the steady hand—and suddenly you’re the one feeling fragile, this show is for you.

What you’ll hear.

Each episode is real talk—no sugar-coating, no fluff. I’ll walk with you through the rebuilding process, covering the topics we often keep to ourselves:

  • Lived Experience: Honest conversations with survivors and professionals who actually get it.
  • The Mental Game: Navigating anxiety, panic, and “scanning” after surgery.
  • Identity: Rediscovering who you are when your “provider” role has shifted.
  • The Rebuild: Reclaiming your life, your masculinity, and your purpose on your own terms.

Some episodes are just me sharing my story and the lessons I’ve learned. Others will feature real men and heart professionals who understand what we’re up against. If you’re looking for hope, direction, or even just someone who understands — this podcast is for you.

Where This Goes From Here

Stronger After The Storm isn’t just about surviving a heart attack.

It’s about living after it.

The early episodes walk through fear and uncertainty.
The later ones explore identity, awareness, and what everyday life looks like when you realise you were never in control — and that’s okay.

This isn’t a crisis podcast.

It’s a long-term conversation about rebuilding a life that still matters.

If You’re In The Thick Of It

If you’ve landed here because you’re trying to steady your thoughts after a heart attack, you don’t have to figure it out alone.
