When you’re in the middle of a heart attack, you’d think your first thought would be about survival — but for many of us, it isn’t.
It’s about the people we love.
In this new episode of Stronger After the Storm, I ask the question that hit me the hardest that night:
“What will my family do without me?”
It’s not fear for ourselves — it’s fear of leaving them behind. And that simple, painful thought can open the door to something deeper: gratitude, perspective, and what I call an awakening to life.

The Night That Changed Everything
It was 4 a.m. on a cold October morning back in 2014.
I woke suddenly, with a pressure in my chest that told me something was wrong — seriously wrong.
As I sat waiting for the ambulance, time seemed to slow to a crawl.
Across the room were photos of my sons, my daughters, my two wee granddaughters — all smiling back at me.
And I remember thinking: Is this it?
Is this the last time I’ll ever see them?
That was the hardest moment — not the pain itself, but the thought of leaving them behind.

The Clarity That Comes With Fear
In those minutes before help arrived, my mind filled with faces — my family, my four sisters, their laughter, the memories we’d built.
It was terrifying and humbling all at once.
But through that fear came clarity:
What really matters.
Who really matters.
And when I came through the other side, that clarity stayed with me.

Life After the Storm
Recovery wasn’t just about medication or rehab — it was about slowing down, noticing more, and connecting deeper.
I began to appreciate the small things — the morning light, the quiet moments, the sound of laughter from people I love.
That was my awakening to life.
Not fireworks or fanfare — just a quiet realisation that I’d been given another chance.

Four Things This Journey Has Taught Me
– Gratitude: Every day is a second chance. Take time to notice the simple things — they matter most.
– Connection: Talk to people. Let them in, even if you don’t have all the words.
– Health: Healing your mind is just as important as healing your heart.
– Purpose: Do something with your second chance — even if it’s small, even if it’s just telling your story.

You’re Not Alone
If you’re going through recovery right now, or living with the fear that still lingers after a heart attack, know this — you’re not alone.
Your life can be calmer, fuller, more awake than before.
This is your time to rebuild — one stronger heartbeat at a time.
